8 Of Family Killed As SUV Falls Into Dry River Bed

Bhopal: Eight of a family, including four women and two children, were on Tuesday killed when the SUV in which they were travelling fell off a bridge onto a dry river bed in Damoh district, police said.

The incident took place near Simri village under the Nohata police station at around 11 am.

According to Damoh district superintendent of police Shrut Kirti Somvanshi, the driver of the vehicle lost control over the steering, leading it to veer off a bridge and fall into the dry bed of the river Sunar.

Eight passengers died and six others injured in the incident, the police officer said.

The injured were admitted to the district hospital at Damoh.

The victims, all residents of Bhita Fuller village in Jabalpur district in Madhya Pradesh, were returning home in the ill-fated SUV from a pilgrimage to Jatashankar Dham.

Chief minister Mohan Yadav expressed deep grief over the sad demise of the pilgrims and declared a financial relief of Rs two lakh each to the next kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 each to the injured.

The tragedy comes a day after six people of a marriage party were killed in a road accident in Raisen district on Monday.

The incident occurred when an auto rickshaw in which they were travelling crashed into a culvert.
