6 Workers Killed, 5 Injured in Blast in Sponge Iron Plant, More Feared Trapped Under Debris

Raipur: At least six workers were on Thursday killed and five others injured in a blast in the coal kiln of a sponge iron plant in Baloda Bazar- Bhatapara district in Chhattisgarh, police said.
The incident occurred at around 9.40 am during kiln operations in the plant in Bakulahi village in Bhatapara, police said.
As many as ten people have been removed from the mishap site, of whom six succumbed to injuries, while four others were rescued alive and admitted to the hospital, according to Baloda Bazar- Bhatapara district superintendent of police Bhavna Gupta.
Rescue operation was underway since more people were feared trapped inside, the police officer said.
The injured were admitted to Bhatapara community health centre and later shifted to the hospital in Bilaspur in the state.
The explosion caused the burning coal and hot ashes spill out of the kiln burying the workers under them, police said.
The cause of the blast was yet to be ascertained, police said.
The management of the company, Real Ispat and Power Limited, has announced a compensation of Rs 20 lakh each to the families of the deceased and Rs five lakh each to the injured.
