5 Dead After Vehicle Falls Into Ravine Near LOC

The mishap occurred along the rugged Karnah–Tangdhar route, a stretch known for its challenging terrain and frequent landslides, which often make driving conditions hazardous. According to the Deputy Commissioner of Kupwara, police personnel and the civil administration immediately launched a rescue operation upon receiving information about a Sumo passenger carrier falling into a ravine. “All individuals involved in the accident were successfully evacuated from the site despite the difficult topography and adverse weather conditions that hampered rescue efforts,” he said.

The injured were first shifted to the Sub-District Hospital (SDH) Tangdhar, where they received initial medical attention. Given the severity of their injuries, several victims were later referred to advanced medical facilities for specialised treatment. Officials stated that while five people succumbed to their injuries, others continue to undergo medical care, and their condition is being closely monitored. The identities of the deceased and injured, as well as the precise circumstances leading to the accident—whether it involved a mechanical failure, overspeeding, or road slippage—are still being ascertained. A formal inquiry has been initiated to determine the exact cause.

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha expressed profound grief over the loss of lives, calling the accident “deeply painful.” In a message posted on ‘X’, he extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for the swift recovery of the injured. He also directed the Kupwara district administration to ensure that the best possible medical treatment is provided to all those hurt in the incident.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also conveyed his sorrow, describing the accident as a heartbreaking tragedy for the Karnah–Tangdhar region. He offered prayers for the departed souls and strength to the families grappling with the irreparable loss. Abdullah further instructed district authorities and medical teams to extend comprehensive assistance and care to the injured and to support the affected families in every possible way.

In a separate incident, seven people including a two-year-old child were injured when a Tempo vehicle lost control and crashed in the Manoor Gala area of Kandi in Rajouri district. Officials said that the driver reportedly failed to negotiate a curve, causing the vehicle to veer off the road. Local residents rushed to the scene and helped rescue the injured passengers before shifting them to Government Medical College (GMC) Rajouri for treatment. Authorities have taken cognisance of the incident, and an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the crash.
