Chennai: Teachers already stressed with delayed academic schedule due to the rains are opposing the National Population Register (NPR) verification work, which they say will not let them finish the syllabus before the exams.

After the 2011 census, now the directorate of census operations entrusted the verification work with the teachers. Teachers will have to go to houses and verify details with the  ration card and for a change of address they have to collect all details of the new occupants. They have to complete this work before  Feb. 5. “This work is really taxing, especially after school hours,” said a school teacher from Pudukottai district. “Schools are denying us permission to work during school hours as the third term started only on Jan. 21 and we have to finish the syllabus,” the teacher said.

“All over TN around 75,000 teachers were involved in this work,” Sami. Sathyamurthy, state president of TN High and Higher Secondary School Headmasters’ Association said. He pointed out that delayed half-yearly exams got over last week and immediately teachers were asked to do verification work.
