Mumbai: Maharashtra police have formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) comprising 23 personnel to investigate the killing of Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Pradeep Purnekar from Thane. The police have arrested a key accused, Papya Shinde and detained five additional individuals, including three women – in connection with the case.

Thane Police Commissioner Ashutosh Dumbre constituted an SIT led by Amarsinh Jadhav, the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime Branch). It also includes two Assistant Commissioners of Police, three senior inspectors, six assistant inspectors, three sub-inspectors and eight police constables, to ensure a thorough investigation into the high-profile killing.

According to police, the team is actively searching for the accused, examining CCTV footage and trying to identify the mastermind behind the murder plot. The SIT is investigating who hatched the conspiracy, who assisted the assailants and who else was involved in the crime.

Purnekar, the Thane division head of Shiv Sena (UBT), was inside his party office in the Manpada area on Ghodbunder Road on Tuesday night, when assailants entered, fired two rounds and attacked him with a sharp weapon. He succumbed to his injuries during treatment at the hospital.

Meanwhile, Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray visited the grieving family of Pradeep Purnekar in Thane, assuring them that the party will not rest until all killers and conspirators are brought to justice.

“I came here to console the family, give them courage, and reassure them that we stand firmly with them in this hour of crisis. We will not rest until the culprits behind this heinous crime are brought to justice and hanged,” he said.

Thackeray demanded the strictest possible action, asserting they will not rest until the perpetrators face the death penalty.

Ram Purnekar, the son of Pradeep Purnekar, has accused former Thane mayor Meenakshi Shinde and her husband Rajendra Shinde of plotting the murder of his father. In a detailed statement given to the Thane police, Ram Purnekar stated that Meenakshi Shinde and her husband orchestrated the crime.
