NEW DELHI: Nearly 2,000 artists from 126 districts affected by Naxal violence will participate in this year's Ekta Diwas celebrations at Kevadia in Gujarat, highlighting national unity and the campaign against armed Naxalism.

Union home secretary Govind Mohan said on Wednesday that Prime Minister Narendra Modi would attend the annual celebrations marking the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel on October 31.

Addressing a press conference, Mohan said the programme would feature a parade, cultural performances and several new elements highlighting the contributions of security forces in combating Naxalism.

Personnel from the Central Armed Police Forces, other central police organisations and state police forces involved in anti-Naxal operations will participate in the parade.

As the contingents march past the Prime Minister, LED screens will display short films highlighting their role in maintaining peace and security in affected regions.

The cultural programme will feature around 2,000 artists from 126 districts that have experienced Naxal violence. Their performances will highlight the resilience of communities affected by the conflict and the importance of national integration, Mr Mohan said.

Other attractions include a play based on Bankim Chandra Chatterjee's Anandamath and performances by people from different parts of the country who have settled in Gujarat.

Mohan said the celebrations would also encourage tourism at Kevadia, home to the Statue of Unity, the world's tallest statue, dedicated to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

The expanded programme aims to honour security personnel while recognising the journey of conflict-affected communities towards peace and development, he said.
