Kolkata: In an unprecedented revolt, two groups of Congress workers fought among themselves and made vandalism at their party's West Bengal head office, Bidhan Bhavan, in the city on Wednesday over the candidature of Rohan Mitra, son of late Somen Mitra, at Ballygunge assembly seat in Kolkata.

One of them was injured while a woman fainted during the clash. Later police and central forces jawans pacified the warring groups. In the afternoon, Zayed Hossain, a Congress leader of south Kolkata visited Bidhan Bhavan at Dr Lal Mohan Bhattacharya Road in Entally with his followers.

He claimed that he was promised by a section of his party leadership a ticket to fight the assembly polls from Ballygunge but was denied. Mr Hossain also alleged that the ticket was however sold by state party leadership at a hefty amount to Mr Mitra. His aides even pasted a poster at Bidhan Bhavan on the ticket-sale.

Meanwhile, another group of Congress workers, led by Kasif Reza from the youth wing, were present at Bidhan Bhavan. They protested the act of Mr Hossain's followers. Soon a fight broke out between the two sides. Furniture and chair-tables were ransacked during the tussle. Mr Hossain's followers accused Mr Reza of instigating the clash.

Police and central forces personnel rushed to Bidhan Bhavan after getting information and dispersed the two factions. Mr Mitra said, “I heard about the trouble but don't know who was behind it. I am campaigning where my party has fielded me.”
