New Delhi: The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved a ₹2,009.61-crore productivity-linked bonus equivalent to 78 days' wages for 11.4 lakh non-gazetted railway employees ahead of the festive season.

The maximum payout per eligible employee will be ₹17,951, benefiting loco pilots, station masters, track maintainers, technicians, supervisors, train managers and other Group C employees.

The government said the bonus recognised the Railways' performance in 2025-26, when it transported a record 1,670 million tonnes of freight and carried nearly 7.41 billion passengers.

Railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the Railways had 1.65 lakh vacancies and had recruited nearly 5.5 lakh employees since 2014.

The Cabinet also approved continuing the National Social Assistance Programme until 2031 with an outlay of ₹53,428 crore, expanding disability pension eligibility by lowering the disability threshold from 80 to 40 per cent.
