A 12-year-old boy in Gosainber area of Panskura in Paschim Medinipur district, West Bengal, allegedly died by suicide after he was publicly humiliated over accusations of stealing a packet of chips from a local grocery store. His last words to his mother, as recalled by the family, were: “Maa, I did not steal.”

According to the police, the incident took place, where the boy was stopped by the shopkeeper who accused him of theft. Eyewitnesses said he was scolded loudly and shamed in front of other customers. Some locals alleged that the boy was even filmed during the confrontation.

Shaken and in tears, the child ran back home and reportedly told his mother that he had not stolen the packet but had intended to pay later. “He kept saying, ‘Maa, I did not steal, I was going to give the money.’ He was crying the whole time,” said his mother, struggling to speak through her grief.

Hours later, the boy was found unconscious in his room. He was rushed to the hospital, but doctors declared him brought dead. Preliminary investigation suggests suicide. An FIR has been registered, and authorities are questioning the shopkeeper and others present at the scene.

Child rights groups and mental health professionals have strongly condemned the public shaming of minors. This tragic case highlights the emotional vulnerability of children and the devastating impact humiliation can have on them. There must be accountability and education on how to handle such situations sensitively.

The District Magistrate has sought a detailed report, and a team from the Child Welfare Committee is expected to visit the family.

This incident has triggered outrage and reflection on how society treats children in moments of conflict often with harshness instead of compassion. For a mother now left with unbearable silence, only one sentence echoes: “Maa, I did not steal.”
