The festival of lights is here and who does not want to keep with tradition and indulge in all the merrymaking and joy? And when we talk about festivals, dolling up is inevitable.  But times are changing and so are people’s tastes. A certain trend has been making its way into people’s heart as Chennai Chronicle learns in talking to leading jewellers in city.  Semi-precious jewellery is now in and has already clicked with the fashion enthusiasts.

Anil Kothari S, managing director of Fine Shine, a jewellery company in the city, gives a sneak peek into the trends these days. “The jewellery trend has completely changed in South India and it has to do with the costume colour also. Previously dark red, maroon and dark green would rule our costumes, but now it has changed. People go for light colours like peach, light grey, baby pink, pista green and all light pastel colours. A lot of people, including celebrities, are opting for rose gold, oxidized, rhodium-polished, Victoria and silver jewellery which go perfectly with the current trend of outfits.”

Anil also mentions the ongoing economic slowdown while referring to the gradual shift to the semi-precious yet chic jewellery.

But what if one is allergic to certain metals? “The good ones will always be copper-based and nickel free. There should not be any nickel as it is adverse to skin,” says Anil. Semi-precious stones may not have a resale value but they will effortlessly bring that desired chic look, especially at these ongoing tough times.

Parveen Sikkandar, creative head/ director of Damini Artisans, echoes the same thoughts. “Platinum and gold are not the trend right now. And today people want to match everything they wear. That’s

where the costume jewellery plays a big role and now we have a lot of colours with enamel too. Coloruful, chunky beads are in vogue and they are very versatile. One can easily wear them with Indo-western/ modern/ traditional outfit.  Even for pattu sarees, people are opting for these  semi-precious beads.”

Parveen says mother of pearl can also be a great choice while its white colour signifies calm and peace. From the economical point view, it will be wise if the ornament is not silver.

‘This year a lot of people are going for earrings as they just give you an instant face lift . Silver is very much in and copper as well.” Feather, terracotta, clay, resin are also absolute favourites, according to Parveen.
