Green vision bags award

S.D. College, which is celebrating its Founder's Day today, recently bagged the Akshaya-Oorja Award by ANERT.

A wave of sustainability sweeps through S.D. College, Alappuzha. That the college bagged the first prize at the Akshaya-Oorja Award by ANERT in the educational institutions category is a testimony to this fact. The award is a recognition of its strides in non-conventional energy production and research activities in the area. There is a solar on-grid power plant of 40 kW and a biogas plant at the women’s hostel, apart from 12 solar-powered lights on campus. S.D. College is also conducting research on developing flexible and high-efficiency solar panels.

The first prize was shared by S.D. College and Amal Jyothi College of Engineering, Kanjirappally. Representatives of the college — Manager, P. Krishna Kumar; Principal, Dr. S. Nataraja Iyer and senior members of the management R. Krishnan and N. Neelakandan — received the award from Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan at a ceremony conducted in Thiruvananthapuram recently. The award consisted of a memento, certificate and cash prize of Rs 1 lakh. 

The campus that’s still brimming with happiness on receiving the award is gearing up to celebrate its 72nd Founder’s Day on June 20 to be celebrated at the Golden Jubilee Auditorium. Prof. (Dr.) G. Mohandas Nair, Advisor, Kerala Biotechnology Commission, will be the guest of honour. Krishna Kumar will preside over the function. On the occasion, a new research journal titled ‘Sanatanam Academic Review’ will be released. R. Krishnan, Secretary of SDV Management Committee, will receive the first copy from the guest of honour. Principal Dr. P.R. Unnikrishna Pillai will welcome the gathering and Dr. G. Nagendra Prabhu, coordinator, will propose the vote of thanks. Theinaugural session will be followed by a cultural programme by the students and staff.
