Good parenting is more important than a good school and academic success of a child. In today’s world, from the benefit of science we know that parents’ actions actually shape the architecture of a developing child’s brain. We also know that children need to grow to be confident, strong, responsible, caring compassionate and self-disciplined individuals.

Workshops are also being conducted based on parenting by many organisations. Sujata Dewaji, Parent Educator from Parenting Matters says, “When we raise children with the care and nurturing, we would actually see a change in the society we create as these are the citizens of tomorrow. The aim is to get people talk about parenting so that parents can get the support and knowledge they need in the challenging task of raising children in today’s fast-changing world”.

Parents play a vital role in a child's education also. So, they need to be more careful and invest their time in checking their kids’ homework, attending parent-teacher meetings and letting children know the importance of school.

“The most essential parenting skills needed for a parent in this day is to stay connected with their kids and very important to have lines of communication open, whatever their age and stage maybe. Parenting workshops are really helpful for the parents and they also reinforce your value system help a parent to be a more effective parent”, says, Anu Raghunathan, a parent of two teenage children.

Most of time, parenting is second nature. And so why does one need to attend a class or listen to an expert?  Awareness about parenting workshops has to be created so that its importance is spread.

“As a parent, my best effort is to stay connected, always listen to what they are coming up with and helps them problem solve by providing them with fixes”, adds, Anu. The parent-child relationship is one that nurtures the physical, emotional and social development of the child. The relationship lays the foundation for the child’s personality, life choices, and overall behaviour.

Psychologist Padma explains “Parenting is all about making the child ready for such unexpected things, for instance, adaptable, ready to learn and making the child ready for the future. Parenting doesn’t have ‘A’ goal. The goal should be lifestyle itself in understanding the future of the child we must realise the ways that the parent was actually brought up”.
