A two-year-old boy who went missing for three hours was rescued after the family dog helped the police locate him in a Minnesota (US) cornfield.

On October 5, the child was outside his home in Richmond, playing with his sibling when he vanished.

Panicked, his family called authorities after searching for the toddler for 30 minutes. It was also getting dark.

Police said thanks to the dog, who never left the child's side, the helicopter was able to spot them using a heat-seeking device.

Footage posted online by the Minnesota police shows the dog walking toward the boy who appeared to be in "preservation and protection mode", the Daily Mail reported.

The search team included a patrol helicopter, fire and rescue crew members and aw enforcement bloodhounds.

Stearns County Sheriff's Office said the child was "in good condition, although a bit cold and hungry" and reunited with his family.

Sheriff's Lieutenant Vic Weiss told the Star Tribune the dog's presence was the reason they were so successful in their mission. The name and type of dog is unknown.
