G. Venket Ram needs no introduction. He may be working behind the camera, but the beauty of his works brings him into the limelight — be it his replicas of Raja Ravi Varma’s paintings or iconic calendar photoshoots with vintage cars, his talent lies in the brilliant usage of colour, texture and giving a fresh look to art works.

The photographer, who has recently become the new Canon EOS Ambassador, shares his journey thus far.

Asked for his views on photography in the digital age, he says, “I feel the major shift is the transition from analog to digital. During analog times, there were very few photographers and their access to gadgets was also limited. It was an expensive profession or hobby to have. It was a long process back then, not one that laymen could handle.

Venket Ram says digital media made photography accessible to everyone and it advanced the process. “Within 20 years, the camera equipment has completely shifted to phones. I don’t say technology makes photography easier, I would rather say it helps to achieve better outcomes. I truly believe that only if you know the art, will you stand out among the crowd.”

His replicas of the paintings of Raja Ravi Varma were outstanding. Asked if he planned to do something similar, Venket Ram said, “Not similar. But I am planning to do a photography series that reflects our way of life. I am not revealing much about it right now. But it involves photography, audio and videography. It will be out by the end of this year or early next year.”

Talking of how he handles the pressure of working with celebrities, he says, “I don’t differentiate between celebrities, models and others as such. When it comes to photography, everyone is a subject for me. I see it that way.” He adds, “Communication skills are essential for photographers to convey the idea in the right way.”

On his recent work with MS Dhoni, the ace photographer said, “I have been working with him for the past 14 years. I have learned a lot from him. He is a good thinker and a down-to-earth person.” He adds with a laugh, “And I must say he is a good actor too. He finishes off in one take.”

The fashion photographer rejuvenates himself by travelling. He says he would love to explore wildlife photography. “I am more of a commercial photographer. I think I haven’t explored wildlife. I want to do that more. I also love sea visuals and underwater photography. That’s something on my wish list,” says Venket Ram.
