Belgium is famous for its waffles and fries! Banana, chocolate, and strawberry and cream were my fond favourites there. Even the street fare in Brussels is delectable, with tiny vendors serving up fries in paper cones with a huge selection of sauces to choose from. The atmosphere has a positive din to it and there are some great breweries to guzzle up, even non-alcoholic beer for the teetotallers! It is one big party. The best place to savour these fries is the Maison Antoine.

On a normal day, there are a bevy of artists sitting on the streets, painting and sketching portraits of posing tourists. Being a painting fanatic, I bought some great artwork here. I didn’t venture into any of the big malls as for the truly eclectic shopping; the small street vendors are perfect, especially the ones on Avenue Louise and Rue Antoine Dansaert.

I would recommend walking or cycling in Brussels. The clutter of the bikes on the pebbled streets follow you as you pass street musicians strumming the guitar. Walking is the best way to explore the country. Do visit the Grand Place at Brussels which has a very relaxed atmosphere, Cathedral of St Michael and St Gudula.

The streets in Brussels are filled with colour, music and a general revelry that everyone partakes of. People with a sporty soul can hop, run or cycle around as it is very pedestrian friendly.

The desserts and chocolates are to die for, especially the salted caramel ones. As a traveller, I prefer going off the tourist track and doing different things. Going solo is a great option, and getting lost in a new place is a wonderful experience, you never know what you might unearth!
