A beautiful bond between animals is the kind of story that reflects nature's enchanting magnificence.

This one is about a dog named Rex and Hummer, the hummingbird. It all began with a man named Ed Gernon from California, who rescued Rex back in 2015. Gernon gave the canine loads of love and a warm home and it seems all those efforts did not go unnoticed.

One day, Rex decided to pay it forward when he was on a walk with his owner. He spotted a tiny bird on the ground covered in ants and alerted Ed to his discovery.

Presuming it was already dead, Gernon tried to move Rex along. However, the canine was stubborn and would not budge. Upon closer inspection Gernon realised the hummingbird was actually still alive.

Touched at how protective his pet was of the bird, he decided to take it home to do everything he could to save it. Just like with Rex, Gernon showed the bird he named Hummer, a lot of care and nursed it back to health. She was soon able to fly again, however not too far.

Somehow she knew it was because of Rex's efforts that she was alive and has never left his side since making a full recovery. They play together and she's always around him.

Can these two get any cuter? Yes. Hummer even has a bath in Rex's water bowl.

Gernon feels little Hummer will eventually fly away to find herself a mate. For now, she's got a pretty strong companion in the dog with a massive heart that saved her.
