Bengaluru: As Sunday marks Earth Day, it is a reminder towards the need to reflect on how our actions can impact the environment we live in and what can be done to make it a better place. This Earth Day is themed to end the dangerously increasing plastic pollution. When plastic broke onto the scene in 1907, it was considered revolutionary, but now it is being seen as a menace to human health, global ecosystems and climate change.

Governments, businesses and organisations are all pledging to address the issue of plastic pollution.

Thousands of Dell employees around the world would engage in clean-up activities in their local environment on this day, to do their bit to raise awareness locally and globally.

Infosys also took a social initiative on the lake restoration programme. At an event organised by Srishti, Bengaluru DC Eco club; more than a 100 Infosys volunteers helped in the restoration of Marli Lake (Maragondanahalli) in Electronics City Phase 1.

Ahead of Earth Day, Beautiful Bengaluru, the citizen initiative working for a clean-green- safe city has come up with a Green Ambassador summer campaign for children.

Odette Katrak, co-founder Beautiful Bengaluru said, “We aim to harness the green energy of our children.”

To participate, children need to visit friends/neighbours and collect pledges from them. The pledge includes carrying one’s own bag and bottle and saying no to plastic bags, straws and paper cups. It also involves judicious uses of water and fixing pipe leaks.

Every participating child will get a Green Ambassador certificate along with awards for Green Champions who excel in their efforts/results.
