Visakhapatnam: On the occasion of Sparrow Day on Tuesday, awareness programmes on the importance of ‘House Sparrow Protection’ were organised in Vizag by volunteer organisations and Vizag Zoo. Paryavarana Margadarsi Vaisakhi under the leadership of Dr S. Vijaya Kumar conducted an awareness programme at the Public Library, Dwarakanagar.

He said “Paryavarana Margadarsi Vaisakhi team has identified some places in the city where House Sparrows are dwelling more, so we have been creating massive awareness as a part of our campaign which started on March 4 on the concept of sparrow protection by keeping food and water for these birds and also making people come forward to place bird nests made with clay, coconut shells and bamboo baskets at available places in the city.”

Social activist Ramgopal said, “We can celebrate the Sparrow Day just keeping a bowl of water and grains for sparrows to feed on, make small nests and allow the sparrows to live in them, make your child involve in it as House Sparrow is strongly associated with human habitations, and can live in urban or rural settings. Rythu Mitra Foundation member K. Rambabu said that the circumstances leading to decline of House Sparrows in the present day scenario are due to the heavy usage of chemical fertilisers and pesticides and concretisation of urban and rural areas.

Meanwhile, Vizag Zoo management organised awareness camp on World Sparrow Day to celebrate the relationship between “People and Sparrows” involving the visitors of the Zoological Park. The Indira Gandhi Zoological Park, curator B. Vijaya Kumar explained this year theme of “I Love Sparrow” including importance of common House Sparrow and threats being caused to the habitat of the species.
