MADURAI: A 65-year-old man suffering from chronic liver disease got a new lease of life on Friday as he underwent a liver transplantation surgery.

Various authorities were involved in creating a green corridor for transporting the liver from Puducherry to Apollo Speciality Hospital in Madurai in three hours. The Puducherry and Tamil Nadu police created a 376-km green corridor through the highway for transporting the organ from Puducherry Institute of Medical Science (PIMS) to Apollo Hospital by 8.15 am in a car escorted by police at key locations.

“We ensured that the car carrying the harvested liver did not stop en route from PIMS to Apollo, Madurai, even for a minute. We also made arrangements to keep a lane on the left side of all toll gates in NH open until the car passed through it,” N. K. Senthamarai Kannan, IG of Police, Central Zone, told DC.

The doctors in Apollo Hospital, Madurai, received a final alert from Tamil Nadu Government Cadaver Transplant Programme (TCTP) that a liver could be harvested from 30-year-old Suthakar from Tirupalapandal village in Tirukoilur, who was declared brain dead at PIMS around 7.30 pm on Thursday.

“Immediately a team of doctors rushed to PIMS to arrange for the liver harvest. Another team coordinated with the recipient family at Vellore and made  arrangements for transplantation here,” said A. Samuel, general manager, operations, Apollo Hospital, Madurai.

The recipient Venkateshan along with his son V. Thulasinathan arrived at the hospital around 2.30 pm and the doctors conducted necessary tests and kept the patient ready for transplantation.
