Walnut can reduce risk of colon cancer

Hyderabad: Walnuts reduce the risk of colon cancer, lower cholesterol levels, heart diseases and strengthen the brain, according a study published in the Journal of Nutrition. The researchers found walnuts were a source of dietary fibre and helped diversify and strengthen the gut bacteria. It is rich in anti-oxidants and improves gastrointestinal health. 

The research involved 18 participants who were given 42 grams of walnuts for a period of three weeks and the effect was studied by analysing their blood and fecal samples. 

Nutritionist Fatima Rehmat said, “Walnuts contain amino acids, omega 3 fats, high amounts of copper, biotin and other chemicals which are good for the health. It is found to be good for prostrate problems too.”

She said every day intake of it should be in in limited quantity as there are some people who complain of mouth ulcers due to the heat that it generates in the body.
