If you experience flashing lights in your eyes it could be a sign of sudden blindness, according to a report by the Daily Mail.

It can happen at any age. People often describe these flashes like seeing "shooting stars".

"Most flashes happen when the vitreous gel inside the eye shrinks or changes, pulling on the retina (the light sensitive lining of the eye)," reported the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

It is a condition that needs immediate treatment in order to prevent blindness.

Here are signs to look for as reported by the Daily Mail:

* Short-sighted people are at high risk because they have fragile retinas.

* Cataract surgery can put you at risk.

* Visions of dots or lines are crucial warning signs.

* Darks shadows spotted moving through your visions.
