Kannur hospital to get a facelift

KANNUR: The Government District Hospital here is all set for a major renovation which would raise its bed capacity to 600. The district panchayat and health department would jointly bear the cost of Rs 39-crore project under the master plan that the government approved for implementation in three years.

“According to the blueprint, the hospital would be divided into five sections—administrative, surgery, women and children, trauma care and super speciality," Kannur district panchayat president K.V Sumesh said. "They include a full-fledged super speciality block with cath lab and coronary care unit.” The project is part of health department’s plan to upgrade all district hospitals to super speciality, and Kannur was the first to come up with a proposal. It will get a firefighting unit, water treatment plant, water reservoir system, compound wall, transformers, lifts, generators, etc..

The hospital has been listed in the 11 hospitals in the state under level-III facility for trauma care by the Union government and would receive funds under the national trauma and burn care programme. “In the first phase, seven theatre units with most modern facilities have been planned. Renovation of the blood bank, separate X-ray units in trauma care section and outpatient wing would come up,” said an official at the district medical office. Already renovation works of Rs 12 crore have been commenced at the hospital, he said.
