A new study conducted by researchers at Harvard University found women reduce their chances of conceiving via in vitro fertilization (IVF) by consuming sugary drinks, according to a report by the Daily Mail.

For the study, the team, between 2014 and 2016, analysed 340 women undergoing IVF.

Researchers investigated the second stage of IVF treatment and women completed a questionnaire to determine what they drink.

Just one drink a day can cut a woman's chances by 12%, while drinking more that one reduces it by 16%. It also lowers the amount of high-quality embryos.

Previous studies have found sugar releases stress hormones that have an affect on the reproductive system's health.

The findings were originally published in the journal Fertility and Sterility.
