The backless trend gives your dress that twist, no one saw coming! It’s sultry, bold and an absolutely classy trend to adhere to. There is nothing like it when it comes to dressing up for night outs in the city  and this one is always a winner on the red carpet too.

Indian designers like Swapnil Shinde are adopting the trend too. Here, Kriti Sanon sports a backless Swapnil dress

Fashionistas like Deepika Padukone, Priyanka Chopra and Alia Bhatt have brought their A game to events when they sported the likes of this trend.

The backless dress or gown is a timeless classic. That being said, it takes a certain level of panache to pull it off. Deepta Raghunath, a city- based designer says, “Backless dresses are coming back in a big way. With the high front neck being the trend in the market, people are more open to deep and plunging backs. Women are a lot more confident to carry them off rather than plunging neck lines. It is important that you never combine a deep back with a deep neckline. Balance it out with a high neck and a lower back.”

The most vital thing to keep in mind when donning a dress that is backless is the innerwear that accompanies it, as it turns out there is nothing worse than a strap peeking to ruin your look. Perfecting this look comes with paying attention to the skin that you bare and having the right bra. Soniya Thiyam, a Bengaluru designer recommends customising the outfit with pads, if getting the right bra is difficult. “When you wear the right lingerie, you are going to look good. Wear it with confidence and remember to keep your back straight,” she says.

The trend has trickled down into the ethnic sphere as well, with backless blouses being very popular now with young women, as designer Mayank Modi says, “Backless blouses with a saree is very elegant, for certain occasions. It gives you a different feel altogether. Have a well-fitted blouse, especially on the shoulder with clips holding it in place is important, since the backless blouse is intended to be very short. As far as the back is concerned a pretty transparent lace or a tie up makes it look nice. ”

Letting your body do the talking for you is the whole point of the backless dress. Minimal accessorising with long dangly earrings and styling your hair with the right shoes is the perfect way to complete your look, as Deepta adds, “Deep backs go very well with hair up dos or messy buns. If you have short hair it is better to keep it messy as it complements the deep back well.”
