Gone are the days of quiet retirement; the elderly population is now embracing an active lifestyle with unparalleled zeal, defying age with vigour and grace.
There are individuals like R. Guruprasad and Dr. K. R. Gangadharan who exemplify active aging, leading vibrant lives while making significant contributions to their community.

“In a world where technology constantly evolves, I saw an opportunity to enhance my living experience,” says Guruprasad the 68-year-old retired scientist from DRDO. “With home automation, I can control my household appliances with just a tap on my mobile or a simple voice command. It’s incredible how modern advancements can make life more convenient and enjoyable,” he adds.

“I remain active, practicing habits to maintain good health: consuming nutritious food, exercising, doing yoga, taking walks, and swimming five days a week. I address senior citizens clubs nationally and attend meetings in many cities. Organised 2019 walkathon with 1500 participants on International Day of Older Persons. Heritage’s popular Golden Couple contests held in Telangana and Tamil Nadu. Honoured as Patron of Dementia India Alliance, hosting Chennai event for World Alzheimer’s Day on 21st September 2023,” says Dr. K. R. Gangadharan, 69-year-old founder chairman, Heritage Foundation.

Fitness activities take centre stage

The active ageing movement thrives on a variety of fitness activities. “Different types of laughs like Silent laugh, Lion laugh, Ravan laugh, Free style laugh, Kung-fu laugh, Mirchi laugh, and more keep us joyfully engaged,” says Rahul Singhal, 70, of Hyderabad Laughing Club. “We do about 30 different exercises, have joke sessions, and make up practical joke scenarios.”

Guruprasad adds, “Physical fitness is crucial to a fulfilling life. I religiously indulge in a morning walk, and my thirst for knowledge never wanes. Helping others with financial advice and assisting the community with IT returns is a rewarding way to give back.”

Nurturing a spirit of giving

Not content with merely taking care of themselves, these seniors are actively involved in community service, making a positive impact on society. “Every Wednesday, the Laughter Club organises Ganesh pooja for 300 members, followed by prasadam distribution,” shares Rahul Singhal.

Ln Dr. A. Vijay Kumar, President KBR Park Walker’s Association, Hyderabad, shares his perspective, “Our KBR Park, the only National Forest Park in the world where walking is allowed with a maximum limit of 5,000 annual passes, serves as a sanctuary for our members. We oversee its maintenance, including the walker’s path, toilet facilities, and valuable medicinal plants.”

Fostering camaraderie through social gatherings

Recognising the profound value of social connections, the senior citizens actively foster a vibrant community spirit through various gatherings and events. Social clubs cater to different interests, while potluck dinners and picnics offer opportunities for bonding over shared experiences.

As he reminisces about his social gatherings and quizzes, Guruprasad shares, “Organising get-togethers and conducting quizzes have been a source of joy for me. It’s wonderful to see people coming together, sharing laughter, and creating lasting memories.”

Senior citizens inspire with active lives, strong bonds, and a golden era of grace.
