HYDERABAD: Hyderabad features among the top five cities for women in India, according to the 'Top Cities for Women in India (TCWI)' index that was released recently by the Avtar group.

The city’s historical and social factors, coupled with supportive government policies, contributed significantly to the ranking.

The index was based on governmental data and primary research involving over 1,200 women across the country. It highlights the city's strides in creating a gender-progressive living space.

Chennai, Bengaluru, Pune, and Mumbai are the other four cities in the top five, which evidences the southern dominance in the rankings. Delhi has broken into the top 10 category for the first and is placed at No. 8.

The report sheds light on persistent challenges that women face. Around 32 per cent of women felt unsafe while 21 per cent were apprehensive about venturing out after 8 pm. Around 31 per cent of the respondents felt that they were judged by their choice of attire while 30 per cent reported mixed experiences.

The index revolved around three pillars — social inclusion score, industrial inclusion score and citizen experience score.

These metrics were used to evaluate the external social environment, workforce inclusion by organisations and the experiences of women through surveys and focus group discussions (FGDs), according to a statement from the group.
