It is the third Monday of the month and as usual when the evening light falls, a bunch of poets will climb the stone steps of the Vyloppilly Samskrithi Bhavan in Thiruvananthapuram. The only difference would be the woman standing in front of a mike, welcoming them all for the monthly round of Kavyasayahnam or ‘an evening of poetry’.

M.R. Jayageetha is happy about the new appointment as secretary of this cultural centre. She has been a poet, a lyricist, for years. And now she can work in a field she is passionate about full time.

“Kavyasayahnam will be conducted as always with poets — noted ones and amateurs — presenting their works. We will continue with all the monthly programmes that had existed.

And in addition there will be a few innovative programmes, the proposal of which I have submitted to the culture minister A.K. Balan, who is the chairman,” Jayageetha says.

Ezhumattoor Rajarajavarma will inaugurate the programme and theatre veteran Karyavattom Sreekandan Nair will preside. The show starts at 5 pm.
