“The artist must train not only his eye but also his soul.” - Wassily Kandinsky. This famous quote from artist Pragya Jain’s inspiration, Wassily Kandinsky, makes a lot of sense  and is an ode to the eclectic and exquisite works by the lady.  Born to a family where art was more of a religion, Pragya’s father Naren Jain, one of the most prominent art promoters in New Delhi has had a big influence in her life as an artist. Pragya insists that as a father has never given her an easy pat on her back and her growth as a startling artist has been due to her constant experimentation, exploration and experience.

Growing up and around art is quite evident in the way she has represented her artworks. Though Pragya is a versatile artist, she works mainly on instinct rather than follow the regular art techniques. Some of her works are a juxtaposition of multiple styles. Some of them have the simplicity of Paul Klee’s works, or Barnett Newman and some have the vividness of Wassily Kandinsky. Pragya Jain’s most recent oeuvres, her third solo show in Bangalore is planned around a feeling of unintended, accidental, unexpected works that  hold together the essence of her original and unique style of painting. Alongside a feeling of freedom to choose the final product, taking calculated risks with her brush strokes, and sprinkling, drizzling paint on her geometric designed canvases was a huge piece of this fulfilling expereince.

Pragya has been creating and compiling all the works for  ‘Wandering’ for over a period of six months now during which she has experimented and explored a lot. This experience has been a living example of the unexpected, overcoming her demons . Having spent a lot of time on each work — each artwork created and determined its own personality. While some of the works are more dominant and striking, others are submissive and fluid.

Speaking about the show Pragya says “ I have dedicated a lot of time towards the artworks in the show,  in order to get a different perspective of things. I want the audience to take away from my art, a sense of positivity; to appreciate the good in every situation. As an artist, there is nothing more satisfying than seeing your artwork speak for itself.”

Pragya’s works show a lot of promise and also showcases her core strength which is originality and a will to keep experimenting. A part of the show’s sales proceedings will go to Abhayam, an organisation that provides holistic development, rehabilitation and psycho-spiritual development to substance addicts, alcoholics and sex addicts. The show was awe inspiring in many ways and this surely will be a beginning of a vibrant journey for the artist.
