Abstraction is a sophisticated form of art which is not only soothing to the eye but creates a sense of simplicity. Veteran artist V Hariram who is showcasing his artworks at the Time and Space Gallery has various narratives to tell through his works.

The oeuvres, which are part of the show is a visual representation of the artists journey, a long road of transition which started with landscapes, moved to geometric shapes and serene abstracts. He recollects his old days where he studied in the Kalamandir College of Arts in Bengaluru, where his love for art started. He owes his artistic transformation to the renowned Cholamandalam Arts Village in Chennai and Mumbai which is fit to be called the Abstract Art Capital of India.

V Hariram’s journey seems to tread the similar path of another veteran Karnataka artist GS Shenoy, whose poignant landscapes in the initial part of his career were well-appreciated and he also later moved onto becoming a phenomenal abstract artist. It took an exquisite book of abstracts by author Michael Scooper and an extraordinary turn of events that led to this prolific landscape artist falling in love with the art of abstraction.

Hariraam is today an accomplished abstractionist who pursues pure non-representational forms in his paintings. His artistic trajectory determined his visual language of abstraction in a remarkable suite of works for the show.

This series is autobiographical, unfolding his journey — creative struggles, depressions, hallucinations, subconscious dreams, intuitive guidance, soul searching, all that bore rich dividends of seeking and achieving ‘abstract’ success.

The works reflect deeply inscribed philosophy, introspection and catharsis achieving mystical ecstasy through his reticent play of forms. Along with the forms, the colours become stronger, intense, magical, haunting and vigorously vibrant; reinforcing the transcendence as they move from the greens and browns of the meadows and mountains, the ubiquitous kumkum reds, the pragmatic yellow ochre the sacred turmeric yellows, the intimate blues, and to the pristine spirituality of the whites.

Speaking about his work Hariram says, “I have had different phases where I have evolved as an artist. I have not idolised any artist which is why it is easier to delve into my own style. One book changed the way I perceive abstraction, and I transformed from landscape to abstractionist. Earlier geometric forms were dominant in my works, slowly I evolved and moved into narratives through abstract. I used to focus my energies on geometrical abstraction, then there was a transition to expressions and feelings, and during a low phase, the nearby architecture and dwellings made me think deeply”.

V Hariram’s abstracts have the simplicity of abstract expressionist Mark Rothko’s paintings and narratives of a Jackson Pollock. For the abstract art lovers, the show offers a versatile canvas and a visual treat.

The show is on at Gallery Time and Space till July 13. — The writer is an art curator and art expert.
