Hi-Tech Cameras Crack Down On Illegal Parking Near Delhi Airport; Over 100 Challans Issued In 10 Days
The initiative specifically targets the long-standing menace of improper and illegal parking near airport terminals and approach roads, a major cause of traffic bottlenecks, commuter inconvenience, and safety concerns around one of the country’s busiest airports
New Delhi: The Delhi Traffic Police has issued over 100 challans in just 10 days for improperly parked vehicles in the vicinity of Delhi Airport that were captured through newly installed hi-tech cameras.
As per Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), the action follows the deployment of advanced Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) camera systems across key airport approach roads and congestion-prone stretches around IGI Airport.
The initiative specifically targets the long-standing menace of improper and illegal parking near airport terminals and approach roads, a major cause of traffic bottlenecks, commuter inconvenience, and safety concerns around one of the country’s busiest airports.
“Illegally parked vehicles often lead to severe congestion on critical airport roads, obstruct emergency movement, increase the risk of accidents, and pose potential security threats in the sensitive airport zone,” DIAL said in a statement.
The automated enforcement system became operational from May 3, following which Delhi Traffic Police began issuing e-challans to violators after due verification through integrated systems.
At present, 14 high-definition ANPR cameras are operational at key locations across the airport vicinity, including Central Spine Road, terminal approach roads, the Cargo area, and stretches near the Rangpuri–Centaure Junction. Of these, 10 ANPR cameras -- six on Central Spine Road and four on the Terminal 1 exit road -- are specifically deployed to identify illegally parked vehicles on airport approach roads. Together, these cameras currently cover nearly 15 per cent of the airport’s overall road network.
In addition, more than 50 ANPR cameras are currently being integrated into the system and are expected to significantly enhance surveillance and enforcement coverage across the IGI Airport road network connecting all three terminals.
The ANPR system automatically captures vehicle registration details of traffic violators, following which the data is integrated with NIC and Delhi Traffic Police systems for validation and issuance of e-challans under applicable traffic laws. Apart from improper parking, the system is also capable of detecting violations such as over speeding and wrong-side driving. In the next phase, enforcement will be expanded to include red-light jumping, stop-line violations, triple riding, and riding without helmets.
“Improper parking around airport approach roads has been a persistent concern impacting traffic flow, passenger convenience, and overall security. Through this joint initiative with Delhi Traffic Police, we are leveraging advanced technology to bring greater traffic discipline and ensure smoother vehicular movement around Delhi Airport. We hope this initiative also serves as a strong deterrent against traffic violations in the airport vicinity,” said Videh Kumar Jaipuriar, CEO, DIAL.
“Improper parking around airport approach roads has been a persistent challenge for traffic management near IGI Airport. Such violations not only lead to congestion and inconvenience for commuters but also create safety hazards and potential security concerns in a highly sensitive zone. The newly introduced ANPR-based automated enforcement system will act as a strong deterrent against habitual violators, as offences are now being captured and processed electronically with greater accuracy and efficiency. We urge the public to adhere to traffic rules and cooperate in ensuring smoother and safer movement around the airport area,” said Shobhit Saxena, DCP Delhi Traffic Police.
