Once a year, tens of thousands of people gather in Nevada's Black Rock Desert to create Black Rock City, a temporary metropolis dedicated to community, art, self-expression, and self-reliance.
Decommodification is also one of the principles that find emphasis in the festival. The organisers strive to create a space that is untainted by commercial sponsorships, transactions, or advertising. There is no internet connection in the region, rendering smart phones redundant.
Leaving no trace' is also one of the basic tenets of the festival as the participants are committed to respect and preserve the environment. No physical trace of the activities is left behind.
The festival encourages the individual to discover, exercise and rely on his or her inner resources.
Features of the event are subject to the participants and include community, artwork, absurdity, decommodification, and revelry.
Because of the variety of goals fostered by participatory attendees, known as Burners', Burning Man does not have a single focus.
The event takes its name from its culmination, the symbolic ritual burning of a large wooden effigy, the Man, that traditionally occurs on the Saturday evening of the event.
The festival, thus, includes experimental and interactive sculpture, building, performance, and art cars among other mediums. Much of the artwork revolves around a theme, which is chosen every year by the organizers.
The festival weighs heavily on participation, and focuses on selfless giving of one's unique talents for the enjoyment of all'.
The festival was first held on Baker Beach, San Francisco, in 1986, as a small function organised by a group of friends. Ever since, it has seen a growing attendance and has been held annually, spanning from the last Sunday in August to the first Monday in September.
They build a master desert encampment called Black Rock City on the playa, a dry lakebed, complete with a tear-down airport, hospital and endless art installations.
The annual pilgrimage to the Nevada desert draws about 70,000 people, many of them young, tech-savvy and from Silicon Valley and the San Francisco area.
