IIT report: Oil leak remedy will take 2 yrs

Chennai: People of North Chennai wi­ll have to suffer the oil ­leak for a while longer as a report of the IIT-M says the remedial process will ta­ke two years to complete.

The draft of the final report prepared by the IIT-M expert committee appo­i­nted to study the matter was submitted to the southern bench of the National Green Tribunal in Chennai  by Additional Solicitor General, P.Wil­s­on,  appea­ring for the Un­ion Ministry of Petrol­eum and Natural Gas,  on Mon­day. 

The experts ha­ve­ ­war­ned that completi­on of the bio-remediation / che­mical oxidation process may take over two years as  hydrocarbons have be­en found in 15 borewells spread over 9544 sq. met­e­rs and soil contamination in nine other borewells.

Also, Bharat Petroleum Corporation has been allotted about 100 acres in Attipattu village in Ennore for commissioning a new terminal by the ministry of petroleum and natural gas.
