Govt Talks Underway To Save AP Theatres: Bharat Bhushan

Andhra Pradesh Film and TV Development Corporation (APFDC) Chairman Bharat Bhushan said discussions are underway with the state government to address the growing problems faced by theatre owners and exhibitors in Andhra Pradesh.

Bharat Bhushan, who attended the Andhra Pradesh Cine Exhibitors Forum meeting in Vijayawada, said the government has been requested to introduce a single-window licence renewal system with a five-year validity for theatres. The proposal would cover various departments, including Fire and Cinematography.

“Discussions have already been held with ministers and MLAs, and the government has responded positively. We will continue discussions with ministers and officials to find hassle-free solutions for theatre owners,” he said.

He pointed out that Andhra Pradesh once had more than 2,000 theatres, but the number has now come down to around 1,200. Nearly 400 theatres have reportedly shut down in the last three to four months, he said.

Bharat Bhushan felt that increasing ticket prices alone would not resolve the problems faced by the exhibition sector. He said the government should also support theatres by providing affordable power tariffs, reasonable maintenance charges and a uniform ticket pricing system.

“Talks on ticket price hikes are continuing, but exhibitors should also consider market conditions and avoid excessive pricing. Producers, exhibitors and the government must work together to protect the theatre industry,” he said.

Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, Bharat Bhushan said the discussions with exhibitors were cordial and fruitful. “We discussed the issues faced by exhibitors. We will now take up these concerns with ministers and government officials and work towards finding hassle-free ways for theatres to survive in Andhra Pradesh,” he added.
