Porugal Vs DR Congo
Cristiano Ronaldo, in his last dance at the World Cup will have his aims set high when he steps on to the pitch for Portugal's opening Game against DR Congo. The Portugal team is one of the favourites to win the entire thing as they are in the Americas with their golden age of footballers. They are expected to get a positive result against a DR Congo team, which is in no means an easy catch.
England Vs Croatia
England tries to find their footing amongst doubtful squad selection and a revamp under Thomas Tuchel’s unbeaten run at qualifying as they try to match fans’ expectations at the World Cup. Croatia will look back on a rich legacy of 2nd and 3rd place at the last two editions of the World Cup as Luka Modric looks to lead another attempt at eternal glory after coming that close in the past decade. It will be an exciting match up as 2 giants of the game with significant history open their world cup campaigns hoping for a successful result at the end of it.
Ghana Vs Panama
Ghana, after a successful campaign at the AFCON will look to prove their mettle on the biggest stage hoping to break into the knockout, square up against the infantile Panama, only in their second World Cup, in the opening of their world cup campaign. Both teams have little pressure on them as the underdogs in a group marshalled by giants Croatia and England and it will let them play fearlessly, boasting their crest on the big stage.
Colombia Vs Uzbekistan
Colombian talisman, Luis Diaz will have to take upon the most responsibilities for a young squad filled with debutants in Colombia’s sixth world cup. Debutants Uzbekistan will come into the tournament with the hopes and prayers of a nation never seen before on this stage, looking to put up a competitive performance. A match for the neutrals, it promises the best for the nation’s representatives on the field who will look to play with all their heart into a long campaign.
Day 6: Massive Individual Performances
The Day 6 of the FIFA World Cup brought giants to the stage, looking to start on a positive note, avoid any upsets, and rise to the top. Defending Champions Argentina and Lionel Messi played just as expected against Algeria, pulling off a hat-trick to and a win (3-0) to get three points and the top spot in the group. With the help of Kylian Mbappe’s brace, France also emerged victorious (3-1) in the face of Senegal’s mighty squad. The young Norway squad also put Iraq on the back foot (4-1) off of an Erling Haaland brace, eventually taking away their deserved points from the hands of Iraq.
First match of the day brought 2018 FIFA world cup champions, France, face to face with African giants Senegal, promising an entertaining start for both teams. Kylian Mbappe turned up to the occasion as he scored a brace in the second half after a subdued first half. Bradley Barcola and Ibrahim Mbaye would also score, for France and Senegal respectively, making Mbappe’s brace the only difference to the score, giving France their first win of the tournament.
Both Iraq, after 1986, and Norway, after 1998, find themselves at the World Cup after a long time away from the biggest stage. With each player debuting at the World Cup for both teams, the match was going to be a tough test of mettle for both squads, proving themselves on the big stage. Erling Haaland certainly turned up with a brace in the first half, opening the score and eventually taking the lead before taking a back seat in the second half. An own goal and a Leo Ostigard header meant that Haaland’s efforts were not in vain, giving Norway their first victory and points at the World Cup, proving their worth at the World Cup.
Champions Argentina opened their tournament against home town favourites Algeria at the Kansas City Stadium, hoping to mount a successful world cup defence. To say the least, Algeria kept more possession but were undone by a heroic performance from Captain Lionel Messi as they failed to convert their chances in front of the goal. A hat-trick at the biggest stage put the attacker on 16 goals, equalling Germany’s Miroslav Klose record of most goals in the FIFA World Cup. With the whole tournament still left to play for Argentina and Messi, the whole world will be holding their breath to watch history being made at the biggest stage.
Austria was also present for the last match of the day as they faced debutants Jordan at the San Francisco Bay Area Stadium. With more shots on goal, Jordan found the net only once through Ali Olwan’s curling effort equalizing Romano Schmid’s long shot. It was a consequent own-goal and a penalty in stoppage time, converted by Marko Arnautovic, that gave Austria the victory to open their FIFA WC campaign. Debutants Jordan also showed promise and potential with their goal scoring ability, looking forward to a spot in the knockouts.
Closing out a day dominated by strong performances in front of the goal, striker supremes Kylian Mbappe, Erling Haaland and Lionel Messi take the headlines with their extra ordinary solo performances in front of the goal, securing victory for their national teams.
