Mexico, which hosted the first day of the FIFA World Cup 2026, played against South Africa in the opening match on June 11th, 2026. A grand opening to the marquee tournament came into play as Shakira and Burna Boy put in a sensational performance of “Dai Dai” to open the proceedings. This was followed by an entertaining match where Mexico came out on top with 2 goals and ended with 10 players on the field. South Africa also ended the game with only 9 players, after a less-than-disciplined showing from both sides.

Perhaps catching the most attention from the audience and the social media, Referee Wilton Sampaio had a communication device strapped on his ear that looked more like something from the future than from the present, sprouting comparisons to RoboCop and even to gaming consoles.

An eventual announcement in English, multiple fouls called among a handful of bookings, the experienced referee from Brazil’s top leagues and even a few World Cup experiences, was hailed by social media for an impressive performance.

Hugo Broos, as coach for South Africa had questions at the end of the match for the referee when he found himself disagreeing with him about one of the red card bookings. He accepted the first booking but believed the incident that caused the other booking was a fault of the involved Mexican player rather than his player.

With goals from Julian Quinones and Raul Jimenez, an initial mistake early in the first half at the back from South Africa brought in the first goal, and a fine cross in the second half guaranteed a win for Mexico between the red cards. With a dominating performance from the co-hosts, Broos insisted that his team didn’t feel the pressure past the first 20 minutes despite it being the Mexico home stadium. Admitting that they made a couple of mistakes, causing the goals, South Africa gave Mexico the lead and the top spot in their group.

A chaotic start to the biggest edition of the World Cup, referee Wilton Sampaio dished out 6 bookings in total, half of them being red cards, finding himself a favorite with the audience. Mexico’s attack proved too much for the South African defense, even through missed opportunities, but it has done little to deter the coach from a long campaign.
