Hyderabad: A city cancer hospital is now home to the world's first PET/MR (positron emission tomography/magnetic resonance imaging)-guided adaptive radiation Ethos (AI) therapy.

With this technology, the newly-opened Omega Hospitals unit in Gachibowli can offer patient-centric and personalised therapy, from initial planning to on-couch adaptation and treatment monitoring. It is also the country’s first hospital to have the best-in-class nuclear medicine department with both digital PET MR and digital PET CT modalities under one roof.

Explaining the technology, Dr Mohana Vamsy C.H., chairman and managing director of Omega Group of Hospitals, said that the radiation machine sees, thinks, adapts, plans and delivers treatment within minutes.

"What the human brain (doctors) takes two days to do (diagnose, plan and treat), this technology helps finish it all in a couple of minutes," he told Deccan Chronicle, adding that when it came to oncological treatment, precision and accuracy played a huge role in terms of not affecting healthy cells of the body that aren't cancerous. He said that the cost of the machine was Rs 82.23 crore.

This new branch, launched on Sunday, is also their first multi-speciality, 500-bedded facility.

"Most of my patients with cancer frequently require treatment opinions for comorbidities like cardiac, orthopaedic, renal, pulmonary, neurological, gastrointestinal and diabetic issues and conditions requiring interdisciplinary care. We can now ensure comprehensive cancer care," he said.
