Fact Check: Iran Denies Arrest of Indian Nationals Amid Unrest
The clarification comes at a time when concerns have grown over the safety of Indian students in Iran
Iran’s Ambassador to India, Mohammad Fathali, has firmly rejected reports claiming that Indian and Afghan nationals were arrested in Iran, calling the information false and misleading. He urged people to depend only on verified and credible sources for updates amid the ongoing unrest in the country.
The clarification comes at a time when concerns have grown over the safety of Indian students in Iran, following reports by the US-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) alleging large-scale casualties since protests began in late December.
In a post on X, Ambassador Fathali said that news circulating on some foreign social media accounts regarding developments in Iran was “totally false” and appealed to the public to rely on reliable sources for accurate information. He was responding to claims on social media that Iranian police had detained a group of Afghan and Indian nationals.
The ambassador’s statement has provided reassurance as anxiety mounted in India, particularly among families of students studying in Iran.
Adding to the reassurance, major medical student bodies — the All India Medical Students Association (AIMSA) and the Federation of All India Medical Associations (FAIMA) — said there was no immediate threat to Indian students in Iran. In a joint statement, the organisations urged families not to panic and said the situation was being closely monitored.
