SS Rajamouli–Mahesh Babu’s much-anticipated film Varanasi is casting a magic spell on movie lovers across the globe. The film is progressing at a brisk pace and is gearing up for a grand theatrical release on April 7, 2027.

Adding to the excitement, Varanasi has achieved a historic milestone by becoming the first Indian film to be shot in Antarctica. Battling extreme cold, unpredictable weather, and pristine white landscapes, Rajamouli has planned crucial sequences in one of the harshest and most regulated terrains on Earth.

With this achievement, Varanasi joins an elite global list, becoming only the fifth film in the world to capture visuals in Antarctica. Due to severe climatic conditions and strict environmental regulations, only a handful of international productions have previously managed to shoot there.

According to sources, the film’s team is expected to travel to Antarctica in the last week of February, marking a landmark moment for Indian cinema. “Earlier films shot in Antarctica include The Thing, Eight Below, Encounters at the End of the World, and Antarctica: A Year on Ice. Now, Varanasi joins this elite club as the fifth film to be shot there—and the first from India,” a source revealed.

The source further added that Varanasi has already been filmed across Kenya, South Africa, and several other major overseas locations, underlining the massive scale and global vision of the project.

With Rajamouli pushing cinematic boundaries once again, Varanasi is shaping up to be one of the most ambitious and visually spectacular Indian films ever made.
