From glamorous roles to action-packed performances, Tollywood actresses are increasingly stepping into the shoes of police officers, bringing fresh energy to the screen. Sai Pallavi is the latest to join this trend, playing IPS officer Nithya Reddy in the Tamil film Om, featuring Dhanush. Wearing the khaki uniform with confidence, she joins a growing list of actresses who have taken on cop roles, including Srinidhi Shetty in HIT: The Third Case and Meenakshi Chaudhary in Sankranthiki Vasthunam.

Kajal Aggarwal's Satyabhama marked an important moment in this growing trend. Producer Tikka Mohan recalls that the actress was initially hesitant to play a police officer but agreed after hearing the story. “Kajal underwent a total transformation for the role and brought a fiery presence to the screen. Her performance was subtle but impactful, and it helped revive the trend of women-centric cop stories in Telugu cinema,” he says.

Actress Payal Rajput, who played a police officer in Rakshana, believes such roles offer women an opportunity to break away from conventional screen images. “Cop roles are mostly reserved for male stars. So, when one comes to an actress, it is an opportunity worth seizing. Wearing the khaki uniform and portraying the gravity of a police officer is a serious responsibility,” she says.

Payal adds that preparation is crucial to making these characters believable. “I underwent specific training to get my action sequences, including punches and kicks, right. Today, cop roles are being written with greater depth, making the characters more human and relatable.”

Writer Gopi Mohan points out that portraying a police officer involves much more than simply wearing a uniform. “Actresses work hard to prepare for these roles, including physical training and, in some cases, weight management. The return of veteran actress Vijayashanti in Arjun S/o Vyjayanthi is significant. She was a trailblazer who set the benchmark for women-led cop dramas in the 1990s with films such as Kartavyam and Satruvu,” he says.

Tollywood is gradually moving beyond the idea that khaki uniforms belong exclusively to male stars. Through physical transformations, action training and characters with greater emotional depth, these actresses are bringing their own strength and style to the genre, he concludes.
