Pawan Kalyan

Power Star Pawan Kalyan’s box-office pull has once again come to the fore with the re-release of his stylish action cult film Panjaa, which hit screens with premiere shows across the Telugu states and overseas on Tuesday night.

Released in 2011 and directed by Tamil filmmaker Vishnuvardhan, Panjaa has been remastered in 4K and brought back to theatres on the eve of Pawan Kalyan’s 55th birthday. The re-release has opened to a terrific response, reportedly collecting more than Rs 2 crore plus, and is expected to emerge as one of the biggest re-release grossers of the year.

Several videos from single-screen theatres showing massive celebrations by fans have been making the rounds on social media. Mega fans have turned out in large numbers to celebrate Pawan Kalyan’s return to the big screen as Jai.

Even after 15 years, Panjaa continues to hold a special place among Pawan Kalyan fans, largely because of the actor’s stylish makeover, suave appearance and distinctive mannerisms. The film may have received mixed reviews upon its original release, but Pawan’s screen presence and the film’s style have helped it acquire a cult following over the years.

Set against a gangster backdrop, the film follows Jai, a hitman working for a Kolkata-based don. The story takes a turn when Jai is forced into a revenge battle before returning to the city to protect the woman he loves.

The film featured Adivi Sesh, Jackie Shroff and Sarah Jane Dias in prominent roles, while Yuvan Shankar Raja’s music and background score became one of the film’s major attractions.

The spectacular response to the 4K re-release once again underlines Pawan Kalyan’s extraordinary fan following, with his vintage screen image continuing to generate tremendous excitement even 15 years after Panjaa first arrived in theatres.
