Jason Sanjay’s Sigma Fails Despite Heavy Buzz in Telugu States
There was considerable curiosity around Jason Sanjay’s debut, primarily because of his family background.
Jason Sanjay, son of Tamil superstar Vijay, made his directorial debut with Sigma, starring Sundeep Kishan. However, the heist drama has reportedly failed to make an impact at the box office in the Telugu states.
“Sigma has barely managed to touch ₹80 lakh, which is quite underwhelming,” says a distributor, who feels the film had enough publicity before its release. “Even Megastar Chiranjeevi and Nagarjuna spoke positively about the film and raised hopes that it could emerge as a big winner. Unfortunately, the heist drama failed to strike a chord with the Telugu audience,” he adds.
There was considerable curiosity around Jason Sanjay’s debut, primarily because of his family background. Being Thalapathy Vijay’s son naturally brought enormous attention to his first film, along with equally high expectations.
Interestingly, Jason chose to begin his career behind the camera rather than stepping in front of it. The decision helped him avoid direct comparisons with his superstar father, while still generating considerable buzz and curiosity around his filmmaking debut.
However, the film appears to have fallen short of those expectations. Jason Sanjay opted for a heist thriller blended with comedy and action — a formula that could have worked as an entertaining popcorn film with a sharp screenplay and energetic execution.
Sadly, the lacklustre writing and average direction have reportedly failed to deliver the required impact. What could have been a slick and engaging heist entertainer has instead turned into a disappointing debut.
For Jason Sanjay, Sigma may therefore prove to be a learning experience as he looks to establish himself as a filmmaker beyond the enormous shadow of his superstar father.
