Move over S. Thaman and Devi Sri Prasad. Tollywood appears to be embracing a new musical wave, with young Tamil composer GV Prakash Kumar becoming one of the most sought-after names in the industry.

“GV Prakash is set to give Telugu composers a run for their money,” says a producer. “A few local composers seem to have become complacent, creating a vacuum that is now being filled by talented musicians from other industries.”

GV Prakash is no stranger to Telugu cinema. Having previously composed music for films like Ullasanga Utsahanga and Darling, the composer is now making a strong comeback. “He is back with a bang. Not one or two, but five Telugu films are currently in his hands, making him one of the busiest composers around,” the producer adds.

The composer is currently scoring music for Ravi Teja’s Irumudi, Dulquer Salmaan’s Aakasam Lo Oka Tara, Srinivasa Mangapuram, Viswanath and Sons, and Anil Ravipudi’s upcoming entertainer. Industry insiders believe his ability to deliver both soulful melodies and energetic chartbusters has made him a preferred choice among filmmakers.

“Some filmmakers feel that the music of leading Telugu composers has become a bit repetitive in recent years. They were looking for fresh options, and GV Prakash arrived at the right time,” the producer notes.

However, filmmaker Hemanth Madhukar disagrees with the notion that Tamil composers pose a threat to local talent.

“It is wonderful to see composers like A.R. Rahman, Anirudh Ravichander, and now GV Prakash receiving opportunities in Telugu cinema. They are known for their catchy tunes and impressive background scores,” he says.

At the same time, Madhukar believes Telugu composers have nothing to worry about. “Leading Telugu composers have earned their place through years of hard work and success. They will continue to enjoy strong support from audiences and filmmakers.”

He points out that Telugu cinema has a long history of welcoming talent from neighboring industries. “This is not a new trend. It began with legends like K.V. Mahadevan, while Ilaiyaraaja dominated Telugu music in the 1980s and 1990s. Yet composers such as Chakravarthy and Raj-Koti carved out their own space and enjoyed tremendous success. So, the idea that outside composers threaten local talent is more myth than reality."
