Close on the heels of appointing P. Bharat Bhushan as Chairman of the Andhra Pradesh State Film, Television and Theatre Development Corporation (APSFTDC), the state government appears to be renewing its focus on the development of the film, television and theatre sectors.

“Fifteen eminent members from the cinema, theatre and television industries are expected to be appointed as directors on the board to help run the organization,” said a source.

According to sources, noted producer-director Chadalavada Srinivasa Rao, Vivek Kuchibotla, DVK Raju, actors Suman, Sivaji and Jhansi are likely to represent the Telugu film industry on the board. Directors Meher Ramesh and Samudra are also expected to be part of the panel. K. Sambasiva Rao is likely to represent the theatre sector, while noted filmmaker and actor Beerlal to represent television, along with other dignitaries.

Sources say the TDP government has constituted the board with an aim to strengthen the functioning of the film development corporation. “A similar initiative was undertaken during NTR’s regime in 1983–84, and now after nearly four decades, a 15-member board is being formed with representatives from different sectors. They can discuss issues and provide better guidance for the development of cinema, theatre and television in the coming years,” a source added.

Industry circles believe the appointment of the board comes at a crucial juncture, particularly amid reports that the Andhra Pradesh government is planning to revive the prestigious Nandi Awards. The awards, which recognize excellence in Telugu cinema, have remained discontinued for over a decade.

“Nandi Awards could be revived soon,” said a source, adding that the government is reportedly considering presenting awards retrospectively from 2012 to 2025 before resuming the practice as an annual event.

“Following the success of the Gaddar Cine Awards in Telangana, the AP government is reportedly keen on reviving the Nandi Awards this year. Bharat Bhushan’s appointment along with and Board of directors could be a step in that direction,” another producer said.
