Veteran producer and former president of the Telugu Film Chamber of Commerce, C Kalyan, has stressed that elections for the apex body are not a matter of choice but a legal necessity.

“Elections must be held on July 30, and the 4000-odd members have to elect a new body,” asserted C Kalyan. “Extending the tenure of the present body is both illegal and void; elections are essential for the proper functioning of the chamber,” he added.

He acknowledged that earlier extensions for late Narayandas Narang and Basi Reddy had happened under exceptional circumstances. “But there are no such contingencies now. In fact, most members are opposing the extension. Former presidents are also formally urging that elections be conducted as per the bye-laws, and as a former president myself, I am directly opposing any delay,” he explained.

Reacting to reports that some 30 executive committee members voted in favour of extending the current body’s term, C Kalyan pointed out, “Just 30-odd members cannot decide the fate of elections, which are governed strictly by the bye-laws. Only the general body has the authority to make such a crucial decision. If the 4000 members request the current body to continue, then it’s possible—but without that, the executive committee’s decision carries no weight.”

He also criticized the current leadership’s claims of achievements. “We haven’t received anything significant from the governments of Telangana or Andhra Pradesh. Their claims are exaggerated and do not hold ground,” he noted.

Asked why he insists on elections now, given that he himself served as president of the South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce for five years without interruption, C Kalyan clarified: “In the South Indian Chamber, the presidency rotated among Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu, and members requested me to continue. But the Telugu Film Chamber of Commerce includes members from various sectors of the industry, so everyone must get a fair chance every year. Skipping elections is simply unjustified.”

He concluded firmly: “We are approaching the Registrar of Societies to appoint a registrar to conduct elections by the end of this month. Elections will happen lawfully, as they should.”
