From broadcasting information to becoming a modem of entertainment, the Indian television has witnessed several milestones in its decades long journey. Amongst some of its most remembered tales and dramas (which enthralled the audience) were based on fantasies, popular folklore, historical and mythological ventures. Mega ventures such as Mahabharatha, Ramayana and Alif Laila amongst others were the game changers in the small screen industry which is now on par with movie making business. While mythological drama has been one of the most popular act on TV, the Kannada small screen which always had its share of such shows and serials, is showcasing some new ones at present. Bengaluru Chronicle reports on the mythical world on Kannada TV.

“The best part of Indian heritage is its rich and vibrant history which comes along with tradition, culture, religions and beliefs.  Mythology is one such aspect irrespective of caste and religion which emphasises good over bad or evil. This is why series like Mahabharata, Ramayana were a milestone in Indian TV. Even popular folk and fantasy stories like Alif Lalila and others based on Arabian Nights were a huge hit across India, and even in neighbouring countries,” says Rajan, a teleserial maker.

One of the main reasons for mythology and such similar acts being hugely popular is for their content value apart from being well known to the vast majority.

“While there are women oriented family dramas, and reality shows for female audiences and the youths, such shows are aimed at the senior community who comprises a major share as audiences too,” adds Manjunatha, producer. He adds that the content with no vulgarity, the text book language and moral values makes it a hit amongst many. Further socio-mythological gives it a new touch to such sagaa.

Serials such as Mahadevi, Shani, Hara Hara Mahadeva, Naagini, Nagakannike, and the new ones — Mahakali, Ivale Veena Paani, Maaya are mesmeriaing the Kannada audience.

Speaking about her experience portraying the role of Parvathi in the Hara Hara Mahadeva, actress Priyanka Chincholi shares recollecting how audience showered love upon her. “Most of the time, I would get a message asking me to bless them as its their exam or when they face some problem. I feel so humbled. I feel lucky to have been part of the serial,”she says adding, “When I started playing Parvathi, I understood what a daughter means to a family, and being part of someone else’s family and raising children has been truly a  phenomenal experience for me. I enjoyed playing the mother’s role. They call me amma even off screen. It’s lovely. Now, I want to be like ‘Parvathi’ when I get married,” she smiles while signing off.
