Bengali actress Subhashree Ganguly has come forward to say that her kids are being threatened with death following an internet storm of criticism over photos she posted with football superstar Lionel Messi.

Subhashree said that she was taken aback by criticism of photos she posted of herself with Lionel Messi when she realized that her fans had taken it to a level of making threats towards her children.

The commotion began when Subhashree uploaded images from a VIP engagement she had with Messi, during his visit to Kolkata recently. Even though the images were taken to showcase the special moment, they brought out the wrath of a section of people on the social media network. The reason was that people questioned why she was there in the first place, owing to the discontent among the people due to crowd management.

“The thing which came as a shock to me is how soon it descended into abusive language,” said Subhashree. “Soon, abusive language transcended all boundaries, with tweans allegedly threatening her young kids,” she said, describing the experience of being subjected to “deeply disturbing” hate speech which may “translate into real-life fear, particularly if it involves a family being caught in the crossfire.”

Her husband, film director and Congress party politician Raj Chakraborty, has been very supportive of her and is reportedly doing everything in his capacity to stop this harassment.

Many of her colleagues and fans have also rallied to condemn this harassment.

The incident has reignited discussions on online toxicity issues, entitlement of celebrities, and the pressing need to shield families and children from online harassment.
