Women take the lead
A slew of female oriented films are making a comeback as the audience is more open to them now.
No doubt that the movie industry across the globe has been dominated by men, be it in front or behind the camera. While there has been a certain change with women also shining bright in the recent times, the regional movie industry down South has also seen the emergence of women power. Though, small in numbers, their presence is being felt along with a fair amount of response from the audience as well. After films like Urvi, Shuddhi, Kiragoorina Gayyaligalu evoked a huge response, the present year saw the release of D/O Parvathamma, which marked the 25th film of actress Hariprriya doing well at the box office. Also, Shuddhi director returns with yet another female oriented experimental titled Bhinna. Further, the Kannada remake of Bollywood superhit movie Queen is also ready to hit the screens and features Parul Yadav in the lead. Pooja Gandhi will also be seen in one such role with women in the lead. Bengaluru Chronicle reports.
“For directors like the legendary Puttanna Kanagal, women played a major role and they always remained the prime characters. Films like Gejje Pooje, Kappu Bilupu, Thaayi Saheba, Kanooru Heggadati and many more showed various shades of women. Some were seen as powerful and some as the victim of circumstances.s However, such venture were a once in a blue moon saga. But now with the audience accepting female oriented films, there is a slight increase in the number of movies with women in the lead,” says director Nagendra Rao.
In 2017 two films — Urvi and Shuddhi which earned great appreciation. Shuddhi, also won awards under various categories. The director, Adarsh Eshwarappa is back with another film, Bhinna, which has already received several awards and a good response from critics even before the theatrical release.
According to the director, this film is inspired by one of Sandalwood’s most loved character Kaveri from Puttanna Kanagal’s classic movie Sharapanjara.
“I wanted to do a comedy movie but once while watching this film, it inspired me to write Bhinna,” he says. Bhinna means broken and also different, and hence the tagline says — ‘broken is different’!
Even maley hudugi Pooja Gandhi, is back in a similar action film ! In her next titled Samharini, directed by Jawahar, she will be seen in an out and out action packed thriller, wielding weapons and holding ppistols. According to the makers, the woman-centric film depicts the strength and power of a woman.
Actress Hariprriya, who recently played a cop role in the women oriented venture D/O Parvathamma, says that she is fortunate to get such roles to play with makers and writers having faith in her ability as an actress in shouldering the entire film.
