Minions & Monsters begins in a modern-day museum, where a tour guide narrates the story of James and Henry, two funny, yellow, goggle-eyed Minions, and how they helped shape, disrupt, and transform Hollywood.
The story then takes us back to ancient times, where a group of Minions, led by Dick, is searching for an evil master to serve. While the other Minions follow Dick, James, who loves painting and storytelling, becomes friends with Henry and Ed.
As they serve different masters, their mischievous behaviour repeatedly lands them in trouble. They are banished from one place after another, only to find a new master and end up causing chaos again.
While searching for another master, they arrive in 1920s Los Angeles. There, they spot a man committing a robbery and assume he could be their next evil boss. However, he turns out to be an actor shooting a film. In the chaos that follows, the Minions ruin the shoot, leaving director Max furious. Surprisingly, the producers, the Bright Brothers, are fascinated by the Minions and ask Max to make more films with them.
The Minions accept the offer and soon become Hollywood stars. However, with the arrival of sound in films, they are thrown out of the studio because they can only speak Minionese.
The Minions once again leave in search of a new master. They follow Dick and eventually meet an alien named Dork, whom they begin serving.
Meanwhile, James chooses to stay behind because he has fallen in love with filmmaking. He writes a script for a monster movie he wants to direct. To help him, Ed opens a magical spellbook that he had stolen from one of their previous masters. Using the book, they summon terrifying monsters that devour living creatures and destroy everything in their path. The monsters agree to act as villains in James's film, but the Minions remain unaware of their true intentions.
What happens next forms the rest of the story.
The film, however, does not hold the audience's attention as effectively as the previous instalments. The narrative drags in the middle before picking up again and delivering an engaging climax. There is also a small love story between the alien Dork and Debbie, a young woman campaigning for women's voting rights, but it feels unnecessary and adds little to the overall story.
The film also pays tribute to several classic silent-era movies, which will be appreciated by cinema lovers.
The film is directed by Pierre Coffin and co-directed by Patrick Delage, with a screenplay by Pierre Coffin and Brian Lynch. It serves as the third instalment in the Minions prequel series and the seventh film in the Despicable Me franchise.
Pierre Coffin once again voices the main Minions. Trey Parker lends his voice to the monster Goomi, making the character both adorable and creepy. Jesse Eisenberg voices the deadpan robot Dort, while Zoey Deutch voices Debbie, a 1920s suffragette. Christoph Waltz voices Max, a veteran film director who mentors the Minions.
The animation is visually appealing, with vibrant colours that bring every frame to life. The music complements the story well and enhances the overall viewing experience.
Overall, Minions & Monsters is a fun, chaotic, and entertaining adventure. Although it has a few uneven moments, its humour, colourful animation, and nostalgic tribute to classic Hollywood make it an enjoyable watch for audiences of all ages.
