Sanjay Leela Bhansali reflects on his lifelong fascination with Padmavati, which inspired his cinematic masterpiece, Padmaavat.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmaavat, released seven years ago, continues to be a landmark in Indian cinema. With its blend of historical narrative, opulent visuals, and larger-than-life performances, the film remains one of Bhansali's most ambitious projects. Padmaavat not only redefined grandeur in filmmaking but also became a symbol of storytelling and visual artistry.

The film, which tells the legendary story of Queen Padmavati, features Deepika Padukone as the titular character, with Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor in pivotal roles. Padmaavat stands out for its stunning sets, elaborate costumes, and unforgettable music that elevates the cinematic experience.

In a recent interview, Bhansali reflected on his deep connection to the story of Padmavati. He revealed, "It is based on the poem Padmawat by Malik Mohammed Jayasi. However, it also has figures and incidents taken from actual history." He explained his fascination with the character, saying, "Her grace, dignity, valour, and inner strength are very inspiring."

Bhansali also shared how his dream of bringing Padmavati’s tale to the big screen had been in the making for years. He had previously directed a stage musical version of Padmavati in Paris in 2008, before venturing into the film adaptation. "This is the first time I explored evil in such deep detail. Portraying evil on this scale was a new and challenging experience for me," he added.

Padmaavat went on to gross over Rs 500 crore worldwide, cementing its place as one of India’s highest-grossing films. Now, as the film prepares for a grand re-release in theaters on February 6, 2025, it promises to bring its timeless allure back to the big screen.
