Music that soothes the soul

Kavya Ajit is enjoying all the time she is getting to spend with music. Apart from a number of live shows and lending her voice for the song Hey don’t worry... from the movie Hey Jude, she has also found time to release ‘La Musica’, a fusion cover for Valentine’s Day, in which she croons a Spanish love song that is then mashed up with ‘Moongilthottam’. What has caught everyone's attention, however, is a video of hers in which she is seen playing the violin in front of a large crowd as part of a TV show. What makes the performance extremely special for her is that she had performed in front of A.R. Rahman.

“That was a wonderful experience. I was part of a previous show for the channel. So they invited me to perform during the launch of a new season of their reality music show. There were other performances as well.” She adds saying, “mine was the instrumental performance along with violinist Abhijith P.S. Nair. Since we knew that Rahman sir would be the guest, we thought of doing a tribute for him. I am really glad that he liked it. He appreciated us,” says Kavya, still sounding excited. 

This is not her first association with Rahman though. She says, “I happened to sing for the Malayalam version of the Hindi movie Mom. But I never actually met him. So meeting him happened onstage. He was sitting right in front of us. I was really very nervous. It was a do or die situation. I was on the stage and I just had to perform.” Speaking about singing for Hey Jude, she says, “Rahul Raj was one of the four music directors of Hey Jude. He called me up and I went ahead to record. It is a duet with Rahul.”

She has also lend her voice for a song in Vimaanam and for a song in the Telugu remake of Two Countries. “For that I got to sing with singer Haricharan. I am really glad I got to sing with him,” she says. Her latest Valentine cover mashup starts with a Spanish song Cosiendome El Corazan... by Thalia. On why she chose a Spanish song, she says, “A bit of creativity has gone into creating this cover. I have had an inclination towards Spanish from a long time. Not that I can understand it but I find it comfortable to sing. I do sing a few Spanish songs. I picked this song because it seems to blend with the other song and also it went well the whole feeling of love and Valentine’s Day.”
